Fashion retail has long been regarded as an industry that shapes society’s standards of beauty, style, and self-expression. However, for far too long, these standards have been narrow and exclusive, perpetuating an unrealistic ideal that fails to reflect the diversity and uniqueness of the real world. Fortunately, in recent years, the industry has taken significant strides toward inclusivity and diversity, recognizing the importance of representing all individuals. One powerful tool in this movement is the use of inclusive mannequins. In this blog post, we will explore the crucial role that mannequins play in promoting inclusivity across various dimensions, including skin tone, gender identity, physical disability, and body size/shape.
Celebrating the Beauty of All Shades
The fashion industry has historically prioritized a limited range of skin tones, failing to acknowledge the beauty and diversity that exists in different hues. However, with the rise of inclusivity, we now witness fashion retailers incorporating mannequins that reflect a spectrum of skin tones. By doing so, they send a powerful message of acceptance, showing that beauty transcends color. When individuals see mannequins with skin tones that resemble their own, they feel seen, validated, and inspired, fostering a sense of belonging and encouraging them to embrace their unique identities.
One of our first inclusive initiatives at Fusion was to create a selection of finishes that represented the spectrum of skin tones for mannequins. Brands can choose from our True-to-Hue colors or create a custom finish of their own. Check out our True-to-Hue finishes.
Breaking Free from Binary Constraints
Fashion has often been categorized as either “masculine” or “feminine,” excluding those who fall outside the binary construct. Inclusive mannequins challenge these rigid notions by representing diverse gender identities. Retailers are increasingly incorporating gender-neutral mannequins that defy traditional norms, allowing individuals to explore and express their identities without limitations. By showcasing a range of gender expressions, fashion retailers help foster a more inclusive society, where everyone feels comfortable and celebrated.
Last year, we teamed with The Phluid Project and representatives of the LBGTQ+ community to create a body-positive mannequin collection that represented authentic, expressive non-binary forms. Check out our Prism Collection.
Fashion for All Abilities
In the past, the fashion industry has largely ignored individuals with physical disabilities, rarely considering their unique needs and experiences. Inclusive mannequins have the power to challenge this exclusionary mindset. By incorporating mannequins with disabilities, retailers create an inclusive environment that acknowledges the fashion aspirations and desires of individuals with diverse physical abilities. Moreover, this representation sends a message of empowerment, demonstrating that fashion is not limited by physical limitations and that everyone has the right to feel stylish and confident.
As part of our ongoing inclusive efforts, we launched the first-ever collection solely dedicated to representing the disabled community. Check out our Para Collection.
Celebrating Every Body
The fashion industry’s traditional portrayal of one narrow body size and shape as the ideal has perpetuated unrealistic beauty standards and harmed countless individuals’ self-esteem. Inclusive mannequins are challenging these limited perceptions by representing a diverse range of body sizes and shapes. By displaying mannequins that mirror the realities of different body types, retailers are fostering body positivity and inclusivity. Customers can see themselves represented in the fashion world, promoting self-acceptance and encouraging retailers to provide clothing options that cater to every body.
Fusion is proud to say that we have included diverse sizing in every one of our collections and keep adding even more.
